Wine Key:

Tried and true, the simple wine key is every wine professional’s best friend. It’s a combination bottle opener, foil cutter, and corkscrew. Everything you need! These come in a range of styles starting with you typical $5 plastic wine key that you can get at any shop to the beautifully classic Laguiole ($150-$300) who’s elegant wood design is a common find among passionate professionals. We’ve also seen the rise of the Code 38 among some of the industry’s most serious pros. It is perhaps the most perfectly designed wine key ever made. Unlike all others every piece is replaceable, making the $400-$1000 price tag a little easier to swallow considering it’s a lifetime investment. Just don’t lose it!

Electric Wine Openers:

Some people really seem to struggle with wine keys, and that’s okay. While they aren’t very functional for the professional crowd, electric wine openers are a great option for the enthusiastic home consumer. Easy to use and efficient, and accessibly priced at around $30.

Rabbit Corkscrew:

The precursor to the electric wine opener, I remember when these first came out and they were all the rage. Can feel a little daunting to wield, but once you get the hang of it, opening bottles will be a cinch. While not seeming very useful from a professional standpoint it can actually be extremely helpful for events where you’re opening large quantities of wine. $50

Durand:

Only recommended for professionals and serious consumers often opening old bottles of wine. Few things are more frustrating than opening an old bottle of wine and watching the cork snap in half on you. Getting out that last bit of cork is a true skill that can’t be appreciated until you’ve had to do it yourself. The Durand is the brilliant combination of a corkscrew and Ah-So which makes opening old bottles almost foolproof. Worth the $125 investment.

Wing Corkscrew:

As a seasoned wine professional, I have used all of the above and the wing corkscrew is far and beyond the WORST way to open a bottle of wine. Throw it out and buy a wine key.
